The new Face of America...
The US Census Bureau reported this week that the United States now has 50 million Hispanics.
That number makes the US the second largest Hispanic country in the world after Mexico (112 million) and ahead of Colombia (44 million).
One of the most interesting facts is that Hispanics account for half of the overall growth of the nation’s population.
By 2050, it is estimated that Hispanics will comprise one third of the total population with 137 million (est) out of a total of 408 million (est). This number is expected to equal Mexico, which is estimated to be at 140 million by the same year.
I came to the United States in 1979. Since then, I have lived in nine other nations. However, I have come back many times and I have noticed the gradual influence that Hispanics have in this country.
I’m sure that for some, this population growth represents the end of a dream. However for me, the influence that Hispanics can have in the US culture and ethos can be the condiment that creates a flavorful new culture.
Having lived in all those nations, I have seen first hand the powerful influence that US decisions have around the world. From the days back in 1990 when the First Gulf War was declared and the food shelves in our town in The Netherlands were emptied by those worried by the food supply to the first class field hospital the US Navy left in Banda Ache, Indonesia after the Tsunami.
This country’s power; feared by some, admired by many and hated by others, defines much of what happens today. However, the rise of new powers such as China and India will continue to excerpt growing influence while we see a waning of American influence in the same areas.
I would like to think that Hispanics could reframe US influence in a way that builds new bridges and establishes new foundations thus giving the USA a new posture and attitude with which to lead in the future.
Hispanics add warmth and intimacy in personal relationships. We bring an understanding and respect for God. We also realize that to win over friends and influence people one only needs a genuine smile.
The best days of the United States are yet to come!
Very Good, Im proud of my ancestors, My father and mother and my hispanic background. I am also proud to be a Hispanic that loves God
